Happy New Year Falcon Families!
Happy 2021! I hope this finds you and your family well and enjoying the much needed break. Classes resume in just a few short days as Monday, January 4 marks the date for all students to return. Unfortunately, the return will be to a continued Virtual Learning environment. The LSR7 Board of Education is scheduled to meet on January 14 to determine which learning model will be used when the second semester begins on Monday, January 25. SLMS will continue to keep you updated if further changes will be made.
Semester one will come to an end on Thursday, January 21. Until then, students are encouraged to continue working hard to finish the semester strong. A reminder that, as a general rule, teachers have been accepting work up to one week past the original due date. When circumstances permit, late work or revisions must be submitted to teachers by Thursday, January 14. Work assigned after January 14 may be turned in up until January 21.
In previous communications, I have addressed the topic of student cameras being on or off during virtual classes. Some of the reasons we have been sensitive to students needing/desiring to have their camera off have been eased by updates made to Google Meet. One of the options students now have is to “blur” their backgrounds while on camera. Having visited many virtual classrooms and discussing this further with staff, it is becoming increasingly difficult to monitor student engagement, participation, and to give effective, timely feedback to students when their cameras are off. Students who are joining the class, but tending to other tasks not associated with the class, are limiting their engagement in the lesson and missing opportunities to further their learning. I am asking, on behalf of the SLMS staff, for your support in encouraging your child to leave their camera on while in class. There are obvious reasons to occasionally turn cameras off, and those will still be considered acceptable. Thank you in advance for your support with this request.
Enjoy the remainder of your winter break and wishes to all for a healthy, happy, and successful new year!
